Unity Statement

Every child is God’s child. We are called to protect each one.
Each year, pneumonia and other preventable diseases bury 7.6 million children younger than five, even though effective and relatively inexpensive tools could save many of these precious lives.
Hidden from view, a child born in the developing world is 13 times more likely to die before age five than one born in an industrialized country. nearly a fifth of these children will die from pneumonia, a disease which is treatable and preventable.
While much progress has been made recently in reducing child deaths, too many children, particularly the world’s poorest, are still dying. It is within our power to save them.
Over a million lives could be saved from pneumonia’s devastation alone if caregivers had the proper tools, such as vaccinations, education about warning signs, and antibiotic treatments. However, these lives will remain in peril until necessary action is taken.
We join the Faith Action Network to declare:
- All children are God’s children, and not one should die needlessly.
- Knowing that childhood diseases such as pneumonia are treatable and preventable, we declare unceasing resolve to protect innocent lives.
- Our duty to protect all children requires that we raise our voices together on their behalf. We call on our leaders to provide the resources necessary to protect every one of God’s children.
